Scales

I use these exercises, and many, many more, for practicing all of my scale patterns. These are references.  I actually start at the lowest part of the scale to the top. I apply these to all versions of the scales. 7 Major Scale Patterns, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, Diminished, Whole Tone. Less so on Augmented and Pentatonic, though similarly.   I always use a metronome and vary the picking patterns. Mostly I’ll do alternate strokes, but also triplets as:

Or

Or Alternate, which brings it’s own problems.  The beat has to be accented.

Practice these one at a time AFTER you’ve memorized the scale Patterns. And after you’ve practiced them on all 12 keys. Also after you’ve improvised with them in all 7 patterns. These exercises are to give you technical mastery of the patterns. These are just the beginning.  I have about 50-60 of them.
